After 2 very potent retreats in 2017 and 2018, we are excited to invite you again to the Akhaldans Fourth Way International Residential Retreat this summer in Portugal - Suitable for all.

This is an exceptional and unique opportunity to explore your innermost landscape in new and empowering ways while immersed in the stunning contemplative setting of Karuna Buddhist Meditation Center. Located high up in the Monchique mountains of the Algarve we will be overlooking Portugal’s southern coastline and the Atlantic Ocean from one of the most peaceful settings in the country. This year will be even more special, as the retreat will also focus the inner & outer work of re-building and re-flourishing the region after the devastating fires it experienced last year (see venue info for more).

Who is this retreat for?

Suitable for persons who wish to explore deeper into themselves, through the alchemy of movement, music & dance. Through a series of experiential processes… active, dynamic, filled with music, rhythm, dance, light, sound, conversation & dialogue, meditation & silence, we take you into an intensive encounter with your own self... Inviting you to re discover & connect with the inner landscapes of your bodymind, heal old wounds, release the past and live with freedom & intensity.

Watch this short interview with Akash (RIP), founder of Akhaldans as she explains about the approach and the retreat.

About the Dances

Highly original, charismatic and mystical, these dances are designed to balance the different sources of energy within us. Creating a harmony between the body, the mind and the emotions. The results are a unique inner centering, a new sense of inner rhythm, a relaxed alertness, a natural silence and grace… leading to a higher level of consciousness & presence. Each movement has its own music & the beautiful, haunting melodies & rhythms enhance the process. The movements are placed within the context of a larger philosophical ideology… the Fourth Way… which is the way of the Sufi…

What happens when we participate in a 4th Way Retreat?

Quiet contemplation? Intense inner processes? Impossibly challenging Gurdjieff Movements? Serious discussion of big Ideas and sharing of our self-observation of micro-moments of forgetting and remembering? Sudden bursts of laughter and sobering insight?

All of the above. Yet, in 2019, the Akhaldans Retreat will add another component: the compassionate rebuilding of the Karuna Retreat Center where our Work in Portugal began in 2017. Just before our 2018 retreat, the Karuna Center was severely damaged in the destructive forest fires that ravaged Southern Portugal.

This year we will challenge ourselves to add layers of attention to the dances in the form of daily life tasks such as of gardening, load carrying, cleaning, and anything else that Karuna needs to restore the physical structure that supports its heart-work. We will ponder the Sufi ideal of being in the world without being of the world as we experience the friction of everyday work with fellow participants and other local volunteers.

And of course we will learn Movements and share and discuss and observe and laugh… hopefully we’ll find time to eat and sleep!

The only thing that will not happen is that we leave the same as we came.

From Whidbey Akhaldans, her center on a beautiful island in Puget Sound, WA she conducts on-going classes, workshops, weekend retreats and offers residential opportunities for those who wish a longer exposure to the Akhaldans way.

CAROL'S MESSAGE TO YOU

"My mission is to transform individuals, teams and organizations by taking them out of their automatic comfort zones so that they can begin to:
Reinvent, Reintegrate, Reconnect, Simplify and Move toward Sense and Respond, the new paradigm in human consciousness and organization, and away from the prevailing paradigm of Predict and Control.

I resolve to never refer to myself as a trouble-shooter or problem solver. I do not want to spend my time and energy reinforcing trouble and problems.

Instead, I see potential. I see strengths. I enhance, strengthen, invite and facilitate potential to grow - to become tangible strengths. I facilitate the process of turning potential into compassionate power.

Why?

So that there is a constant output of value, spirit, and animation;
So that each individual fulfills more of their unique potential and purpose;
So that each part of the organism contributes to the good working of the whole; So that the organism fulfills more of its unique potential and purpose in the larger universal environment.

My vision is:

A world where awareness, intimacy and spontaneity are available to everyone, everywhere.
A world where everyone is connected to themselves, others and purpose in healthy ways.
A world where I operate from love and an open, playful heart."

Language

The primary language of the retreat will be movement, supported with silence. Theory and explanations will be given in English to add context and framework.
For those parts, translation will be provided also to Portuguese and Spanish during the entire retreat.

The Venue

The retreat will be held at Karuna Meditation center in the mountains of Serra de Monchique in the Algarve, Portugal. Serra the Monchique is known for its healing thermal water, medicinal plants, pure air and lush green landscapes.

The Retreat Center offers a stunning view over Portugal’s southern coast and the Atlantic Ocean. We will be amongst one of the most secluded and silent places in this area. The Retreat Center’s property is isolated and perfect for those in search of silence, seclusion and inner peace.

Last year, the region suffered immense forest fires that have brought large scale devastation and grief to many people, animals and plants. In those fires the Karuna center was also severely damaged. However, this was a wonderful opportunity to re-connect to the nature of this path, where the unknown mystery of impermanence and interconnections, as the fires and the damage presented a gift, to step in, to step up and above any selfish ideas, and to be in service of rebuilding this special place, as a service to the region and the many people who participate in its events.

By August Karuna will be up and running fully at its newly rejuvenated glory, and this retreat will explore ways to infuse our inner work, and the Fourth way dances and practices, into the work with the land and spirit of Karuna.
